Home Clergy Letter Beacon Group Reports Safeguarding

The Guild is responsible for financing the upkeep and maintenance of St. Lawrence’s Ancient Church and Churchyard.

We held two successful fundraising events in 2016.  The first was in July when St. Lawrence’s church was full to bursting for our Jazz Evening when we once again welcomed members of Dave Hewitt’s Trad Jazz Band.  Secondly, in September our annual Coffee Morning was very well supported.  It was good to see the church full of visitors chatting over their coffees and supporting the various stalls.  Our programme of Guided Tours of the Ancient Church, held throughout the summer, continued to be well attended.

While not fundraising events, we also benefited from the generous collections taken at the annual St. Lawrencetide Service held in August and the December Carol Service. The St. Lawrencetide Service was taken by the Rev. Catherine Dowland-Pillinger from St. Paul’s church, Woldingham. This, like the Carol Service, is an ecumenical service and many people from other churches in the area were in the congregation.

It was lovely having some of the members of the Salvation Army’s Croydon Citadel Band to play the carols at our Carol Service once again.  In fact we are delighted that they have made us a permanent annual booking.  It was standing room only in the Ancient Church and many members of the congregation stayed on after the service to enjoy wine and mince pies.

Membership of the Guild is open to all.  There is no fixed donation but we do ask for a minimum amount of £2 a year, please. Red application forms are available in both St. Lawrence’s and St. Mary’s churches.
